Albedo: Discovering Your True Gifts Amidst the Ashes of What Was

The concept of Albedo, drawn from the ancient practice of alchemy, signifies a stage of purification or enlightenment. In the alchemical process, it is the phase where a substance is whitened, symbolizing the removal of impurities to reveal its pure essence.

If you have started your pivot from executive to entrepreneur, especially from a JOB to a Legacy business, you’ll probably find yourself standing in a lot of leftover ash from the Negredo (burning away) process.

Old relationships, old skills, old branding, old books - heck - even your old business wardrobe just might not “fit” you anymore.  It may feel freeing.  It may feel scary, like you have released too much.  But this is completely normal.

Metaphorically, Albedo is a compelling concept that can be applied to our personal and professional lives—especially for those embarking on the journey of rediscovering themselves and building a legacy business.

The Cycle of Life and Transformation

Life is a series of transformative cycles: birth, growth, decay, death, and rebirth. These stages, whether in a business, relationship, or individual’s life, serve as transitional phases that often come with varying degrees of chaos, clarity, and enlightenment.

When we encounter the “ashes” or the remnants of what once was—be it a career, a relationship, or an aspect of self—it is tempting to see it as a point of termination.

However, Albedo teaches us that these ashes are fertile ground for rediscovery and rebirth.

Searching for Your True Gifts Amongst the Ashes

Albedo is not merely a stage of letting go, but also one of discovering and embracing what is truly essential. When a forest fire devastates a landscape, it leaves behind ashes that enrich the soil for new growth. Similarly, when one chapter in our life concludes—especially a long-standing career or venture—it can be a profound opportunity to sift through the 'ashes' and find the 'seeds' or gifts that can nurture your future.

The Psychology of Discovering Your Gifts

Finding your innate gifts is not just about skills and talents but is deeply intertwined with your psychology. Here’s how:

Self-awareness:

Deep self-awareness is the first step in uncovering your gifts. Often, societal expectations, childhood programming, or self-imposed limitations obscure these gifts. Engaging in introspection can help peel away these layers.

Cognitive Dissonance:

Sometimes, your true gifts may conflict with your current role, causing a state of cognitive dissonance. Resolving this conflict often leads to an acceptance and understanding of your actual gifts.

The Flow State:

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi identifies the 'flow state' as a point where you lose yourself in an activity, forgetting about time. The activities that induce this state are usually linked to your inherent gifts and skills.

Practices for Discovering and Polishing Your Gifts

Your gifts still lie within you.  I promise you.  You were born with a purpose, and if you feel you are not living your purpose, then you are probably not using those gifts.  But they are there and you can find them.  Here’s some ways:

For the Mind:

  • SWOT Analysis: Conduct a SWOT analysis focusing on your personal skills, preferences, and experiences. This exercise will help you identify your strengths and opportunities, which may point toward your innate gifts.

  • Mind Mapping: Create a mind map around your interests and skills. This visualization can often help make connections you may have otherwise missed.

  • Journaling: Keep a 'Gifts Journal.’ Every day, jot down activities or tasks that made you feel accomplished, content, or even happy. Over time, patterns will emerge.

For the Body:

  • Physical Engagement: Activities like dancing, painting, or even cooking engage different aspects of your bodily intelligence. These can offer clues to your gifts.

  • Nature Walks: Often, disengaging from daily hustle and connecting with nature can provide newfound clarity and insights.

  • Body-Mind Practices: Yoga and Tai Chi are excellent for connecting your physical and mental selves. Your body can hold wisdom about your inherent gifts that your mind may overlook.

For the Spirit:

  • Meditation: Mindfulness and transcendental meditation techniques can offer profound insights into your true nature and, by extension, your gifts.

  • Spiritual Retreats: Taking time off to engage in a spiritual retreat can be an enlightening experience, often revealing aspects of yourself you hadn’t previously considered.

  • Consult Spiritual Texts: Sometimes, ancient wisdom can offer modern insights. Delve into spiritual texts that resonate with you for guidance and revelations.

The Power of Albedo in Self-discovery

Embracing the concept of Albedo is not just a spiritual or philosophical undertaking. It's deeply rooted in psychology and can be substantially supported through practical, everyday activities. When you begin this journey, you’re not just looking for a new business opportunity or even a new life; you're searching for your most authentic self. The activities and practices mentioned are tools to help you dig deep, polish your inherent gifts, and turn them into a legacy that lasts.

By approaching the Albedo phase with a multi-faceted approach that engages the mind, body, and spirit, you prepare the ground not just for personal transformation but for the germination of a legacy that truly represents the most authentic version of you.
