Introduction

Meditation is not just a spiritual exercise; it’s a transformative habit that can significantly improve your physical health, emotional well-being, and mental clarity. But I get it - it’s not as easy as it sounds.  I’m with you.  Sometimes I just sit there and think.  I just can’t get to the clear formless space that all those Yogi’s seem to be tlkaing about.

It’s so frustrating, which then makes the meditation EVEN HARDER!  But I have learned to give myself a break.  There probably isn’t even such a thing as a perfect meditation.  That being said, it’s worth the effort - or non-effort as the case may be.  Why?  Well, let me share with you!

As an integral part of various spiritual traditions, meditation has long been recognized for its healing capabilities. In recent years, scientific research has only affirmed its myriad benefits, ranging from stress reduction to enhanced cognitive function.

In this post, we’ll explore some of these benefits and introduce a simple meditation exercise perfect for beginners.

The Physical Benefits

1. Reduces Stress:

One of the most recognized benefits of meditation is its ability to lower stress levels. Stress activates the body's "fight or flight" response, but meditation activates the body’s relaxation response, helping to neutralize stress and restore a sense of calm and balance.  I know it might feel even MORE stressful as you start out - but stick with it!

2. Improves Sleep:

The relaxation from meditating can significantly improve the quality of sleep, helping those who struggle with insomnia find rest. I do a little meditation every night and it helps me fall - and stay - asleep.  It’s called a body scan.  You might have heard of it.  I start at my toes and work all the way up to the top of my head - focusing on relaxing each part.  I pay extra attention to my ankles, knees, hips, ribs, finger, jaw, neck and ears.  I find that helps the other bits relax too.  Once I’ve done that - if I’m still awake I visualize myself on a raft and floating on a beautiful peaceful lake with a full moon and a myriad of stars in the sky. That usually does it.

3. Boosts Immune System:

Regular meditation can also improve your immune system, making you more resilient to illness. And we can ALL use that!  (Come to think of it, since I started my more regular practice, I haven’t been sick despite a LOT of travel.  Cool!)

Emotional Well-being

1. Enhances Emotional Health:

Meditation has been linked to improved mood and behaviors due to an increase in positive neural activity. It’s amazing how much nicer my husband is when I do my daily practice!

2. Promotes Mindfulness:

Practicing meditation cultivates mindfulness, which makes you more aware of your thoughts and actions, and allows you to be fully present.  In other words, practice makes perfect.  Just keep with it!  Eventually those thoughts calm the F*** down!

3. Improves Relationships:

Being more mindful and relaxed helps you approach relationships with a sense of calm and understanding, leading to healthier interpersonal interactions. (See comment about husband above.)

Cognitive Benefits

1. Enhances Focus and Concentration:

Studies have shown that meditation can help improve your ability to sustain attention.  I don’t know about you - but I’m a bit of a butterfly chaser.  Focus is one of my weaker areas - and something I will use any tool in my toolbox the build! (No Adderal for me, thank you very much!)

2. Boosts Memory:

Regular meditation has been shown to improve memory retention and recall abilities.  I’m 55.  I lose at least ½ my words on any given day. Yeah.

3. Encourages Creativity:

Many people report that they are far more creative after meditating, thanks to a clear mind and increased focus.  I feaking love this.  I have wanted to be more creative, and have even added it to my daily activities!  Since meditating regularly I’ve actually beginning to come up with more ideas for blog posts and books.  I sing (in the shower) more.  (I wonder if meditation can improve my caterwauling?)

Have I convinced you yet?

If so - here’s an easy way to start.

A Simple Meditation for Beginners

Meditation doesn’t have to be complicated, and you can start with just a few minutes a day. Here's a beginner-friendly meditation exercise you can try:

Preparation

1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed.

2. Sit Comfortably: You can sit on a chair, cushion, or the floor. Keep your back straight to allow for clear breathing.

The Meditation

1. Close Your Eyes: Gently close your eyes to help focus your inner sense.

2. Focus on Your Breath: Take deep, natural breaths. Feel the sensation of air moving in through your nostrils and going out.

3. Count Your Breaths: Count one as you inhale and two as you exhale, up to 10, and then reverse back to one. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath and start counting again.

Duration

Start with 5 minutes and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable with the practice.

See?  Easy.

And don’t worry about the chatter.

Just commit to the time.

Hey - if out of 5 minutes you get 1 minute of peace, it was worth it!

Also - put it in your calendar.  Set a reminder.  Use Routinery.  Whatever it takes to be more consistent with your practice.

Conclusion

Meditation is a multi-dimensional tool that can significantly improve your life on various fronts. It’s a practice that requires minimal resources but offers maximal benefits. The beauty of meditation is its simplicity and accessibility, making it an ideal habit to cultivate for lifelong benefits. If you haven't tried meditation yet, the beginner's exercise mentioned above is an excellent place to start.
