How Two Books Transformed My Confidence & Success After 50

📚 Lessons from Good Energy & 10x Is Easier Than 2x

In 2023 I found myself at a crossroads. I needed to rebuild my confidence, rethink my approach to success, and make bold changes. But where do you start when you know you need something different—yet you’re unsure what that “different” even looks like?

Two books became my guides, and honestly, they changed my life. Not just my mindset—but also my energy, focus, and approach to growth

If you’re feeling stuck, uncertain, or ready to step into your next level, I highly recommend them.

Here’s why.

Book #1: Good Energy by Dr. Casey Means

I’ve been known as a go-giver and go-getter.  Always on the leading edge.  Always diving headlong into new technologies, new businesses, and pushing forward.  Sometimes (especially when it came to diets)  chasing quick fixes to get results.  Sound familiar?

But Good Energy showed me that true vitality doesn’t come from doing more; it comes from tuning into our bodies and aligning our habits with what we truly need.

Key Takeaways from Good Energy

Your Body Speaks—Listen to It
Dr. Casey Means explains how our bodies constantly send us signals about what helps or harms us. Instead of ignoring fatigue, stress, or gut health issues, we should pay attention and adjust accordingly.

Sustainable Energy Beats Quick Fixes
I used to rely on caffeine, productivity hacks, and willpower to push through. But this book taught me that true energy comes from:

  • Stable blood sugar (goodbye, energy crashes)

  • Nutrient-dense food that fuels performance

  • Movement that feels good (not punishing workouts)

  • Rest that actually restores

The Energy Audit: Do More of What Fuels You
One of the most powerful exercises from Good Energy is the Energy Audit. It’s simple but eye-opening:

  1. For one week, track your activities and note when you feel energized vs. drained.

  2. Look for patterns—what gives you energy? What saps it?

  3. Adjust your routine to maximize what fuels you and reduce what depletes you.

I was shocked by what I discovered. I thought certain tasks were productive, but they were actually draining me. Making small shifts—like more time outdoors and fewer energy-draining meetings—completely changed my days.

Book #2: 10x Is Easier Than 2x by Dan Sullivan & Dr. Ben Hardy

If Good Energy helped me restore my foundation, 10x Is Easier Than 2x changed my thinking about growth.  (Thanks for introducing me to this one, Bernadette!)

The Core Idea: Thinking Bigger Makes Growth Easier

Most of us try to improve in small, incremental steps. We set goals like:

  • 2x growth in our business

  • A slight raise in our salary

  • A modest improvement in health or confidence

But this book flips that logic. Big, transformative goals—10x improvements—are actually easier than 2x goals.

Why? Because 10x Thinking Forces You to Change How You Operate.

Focus on the Few Things That Matter
When you aim for a 2x improvement, you keep doing the same things—just harder. But to reach 10x, you have to eliminate everything that doesn’t directly contribute to your bigger goal.

Cut the 80%—Double Down on the 20%
A major exercise from the book is the Elimination Exercise:

  1. Identify the 20% of activities that drive 80% of your success.

  2. Eliminate or delegate the rest.

This was tough at first! But once I let go of “busy work” and focused on high-impact activities, my productivity soared.

Think Beyond What You Think You Can Do
One of my favorite lines from the book:
"If you let go of smaller goals and aim for bigger transformations, you free yourself to think in an entirely new way."

Instead of asking, “How can I make a little more money?” I started asking, “How can I create exponential value?” Instead of, “How can I improve my health?” I asked, “What would it take to feel amazing every day?”

How to Apply These Lessons in Your Life

I know these concepts can feel abstract, so here are three practical steps you can take today:

1️⃣ Vision Mapping (From 10x Is Easier Than 2x)

  • Write down your 10x goal (not 2x!)

  • List the mindset shifts you need to make to reach it

  • Identify what’s holding you back and what you need to eliminate

2️⃣ Energy Audit (From Good Energy)

  • Track what fuels vs. drains you

  • Cut out what depletes your energy

  • Do more of what recharges you

3️⃣ Mind-Body Check-In (From Good Energy)

  • Every morning, do a quick body scan

  • Identify tension points and consciously release them

  • Set an intention for the day based on what your body needs

Final Thoughts: Books as Mentors in Your Pocket

These two books gave me exactly what I needed:
📖 Good Energy helped me reconnect with my body and create sustainable habits.
